Hello, I have seen lots of bikes on here with 6 roller variators from scooters. I was wondering if I could get any info on this, like which ones people have adapted most easily, or which are the most effective. I know with most you need to bore out the inner part of the variator to fit on the clutch bell. Anything else?

I know some people in the US are using derbi TJT performance variators. they fit right on, but people have had trouble with the rear pulley spring not being strong enough. Anyone encountered this?

Also, I havent really seen anything about clutch modifications here. I know you can get the dio clutch springs which are stiffer, any other mods? Scooter clutches or anything like that that can be adapted.

I think most 6 roller variators on here, are standard honda pa50 variators. Don't you have these in the US ?
Here we have 3 roller or 6 roller variator, both are common to find here.
I have no experience with scooter variators, so i cannot answer your question, maybe someone else can

I think the most efficient way to get more performance is tuning a standard 6-bill variator from a camino, there are manuals about how to do that on the internet.

A tuned 6-bill variator in combination with a Fast Arrow vario star and some light weight rollers and a clutch with more stiffer springs gives very good results on my camino.

A friend of me tried a Derby variator on his camino but he could'nt achieve high speed with that.
You can use a lot of brands of springs on your clutch, most of the scooter springs fit perfectly, i think i have some from a minarelli that fit great on my clutch.

Thanks for the info. The caminos (hobbits as they are called here) only came with tiny 3 roller variators, guess thats why I was confused.

I think I will have to try the stock derbi variator. I know a couple people here who have had good success with them. I already ordered springs for the clutch, I was just hoping there was a little more I could do.

We are having a race league here next year, and I will be running against some very powerful puegoet and motobecanes, with huge clutches, clutch pulleys, and performance variators, so I am looking for any other tips to keep it competitive with these guys.

Is this the one you are reffering to? What kind of modification needs to be done to it? I tried looking around this site, but its hard when I cant read anything :/

I used a Malossi multivar for Piaggio (like this one).

It works very nice . It gives a much better performance compared with the original 3- or 6-bill variator, because this variator has a bigger diameter (especially in combination with a scooter rear pulley you reach a higher top speed), the accelleration is better while the 'path' of the rollers is longer which makes it easier to adjust te RPM by using (and trying out) different weight rollers.

BUT: I had to make several modifications:
Step 1: I had to bore out both the inner part of the variator;
Step 2: I had to make the part where the variator is put on smaller (to make it fit);
Step 3: Inside the new diameter of the variator, I had te fit a new ring of copper (for smooth sliding of de variator);
Step 4: I had to remove a bit of material from the variator so the variator has space to slide;
Step 5: I had to modify a ram-plate (while the original one, as well as the one that comes with the Multivar variator won't fit after modify-step 4).

I attached a drawing to this post in which you can find the adaptions noted above.

It takes quite a lot of work (or a lot of money ), but I'm very pleased with the result. I've made one for my 'sprint'-Camino from which I will make a short video when the engine is running properly (and show this video on this site). I'm considering to make another one for my daily Camino.

Ahh, yes. This is the kind of info I am looking for. Very informative. What kind of scooter rear pulley did you use along with the variator? What kind of adaptation went into making that work.

I know it takes a lot of work/money to make these things work, but I am willing. I appreciate the info. I am sure I could figure it out on my own, but I am glad there is some info heer so I dont have to go into it completely blind with no ideas where to start.

Today I have tried a Derby variator on my camino and got a top speed improvement from about 10 km/h with it.

Thanks for the info on the derbi variator. I am searching for one now. It will be my first step to see what kind of performance I can get out of the hobbit before I go crazy customizing a scooter variator to fit.

Maybe I can buy a new pulley by my dealer...
I think a new complete puley cost about 100 euro.
